Day of the Gods

My favorite piece from the Impressionist exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago is Day of the Gods. (OK, and the Seurat. And the Renoir. Oh, and the small Rodin sculptures. And many, many other pieces. Quiet, you.)

For years i had a few Gauguin prints that i just adored, including this one:

And my friend just scored me a free ticket to the MFA exhibit for Saturday, just when i thought i would not be able to go. Life is good.

That was INCREDIBLE! i got to see a few paintings from the AIC that i really loved, and so others i had seen only in prints. The ones from the Hermitage were really nice since there is no reason to expect to be in St. Petersburg anytime soon. The woodcuts were amazing too, and of course some wood sculpture.

It was really interesting to see them all together, chronologically, and with a lot of attention given to the way the works related together and the way certain themes evolved.

Why is there a guy on a horse so often? Who is he? He is not Gauguin himself, i don't think, because in Day of the Gods there is both a guy on a horse over in the distance on the far right, and the guy holding his girlfriend right to the right of the idol is pretty clearly him.

i had not realised this exhibit was only going to be here and Musée d'Orsay. i guess i just assumed it would be touring. Huh.

Most of the works shown on this page were there.

Tyler could not have known how much i love Gauguin when he asked me. It was such good luck to get to go, and for free to boot!

Today was a great day.
