Spiderman 2

Two enthusiastic thumbs up! Amazingly, we managed to get good seats at a preview. The opening credits by Alex Ross are gorgeous. And to think, i was not even interested in the first film.

Thanks for the passes, Matt.

Candy is Dandy

When i found the Molecular Expressions project website earlier this year, i had not realized that there was also a movie gallery there.

Maybe because the still photomicrographs of crystals of various cocktails (and other substances) as they appear under polarized light were pretty enough to distract me.

Mint Julep

But movies are always fun. God, i really do hope some of my tax dollars went to them.

Day of the Gods

My favorite piece from the Impressionist exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago is Day of the Gods. (OK, and the Seurat. And the Renoir. Oh, and the small Rodin sculptures. And many, many other pieces. Quiet, you.)

For years i had a few Gauguin prints that i just adored, including this one:

And my friend just scored me a free ticket to the MFA exhibit for Saturday, just when i thought i would not be able to go. Life is good.

Tickle me, Elmo

The person who sent these is appropriately contrite, i assure you:
A new employee is hired at the Tickle Me Elmo factory and she reports for her first day promptly at 0800.

The next day at 0845 there is a knock at the Personnel Manager's door.

The Foreman from the assembly line throws open the door and begins to rant about the new employee. He complains that she is incredibly slow and the whole line is backing up, putting the entire production line behind schedule.

The Bartender and the Ducks

The bartender was surprised, but experienced, and had learned not to ask people about animals they bring into the bar, so when a man walked in with three ducks, he made no reference to them. They chatted for about a half hour before the man had to go to the restroom, leaving the ducks on the bar. The bartender was alone with the ducks and there was an awkward silence as they all looked at one another. Finally, the bartender decided to break the ice and try to make a little conversation.

"Say, what's your name?" he asked the first duck.

"Huey," replied the first duck.

Harsh Reality

One sharp-eyed reader (Thanks, JP!) pointed out to me that the Bush-counter is not quite right because it counts down to election day and not to the day Kerry will actually take office. i do appreciate the correction!

And as soon as i can face that reality (*sob*), i will fix it, i promise. Or maybe i will just reset it after the election, to mete out the hope.

30 Days

So, it seems that Morgan Spurlock got a pilot commitment from FX. Good for him! It seems to build on his "SSM" concept. (i hope it is sufficiently distinct from 'Faking It'.) Thanks, Daily Show.

From TVTome:

Morgan Spurlock ("Super Size Me") has scored a pilot commitment from the cable channel for a new one-hour documentary series that plants an individual for 30 days in a completely different lifestyle, whether religious, economic or ethnic. The news marks John Landgraf's first pilot order since taking over the entertainment reigns of the network. Spurlock, who will have an on-air role as host in the pilot, says possible storylines include a wealthy person would discover what it's like to be poor, or a prosecutor would try a 30-day prison sentence. He'll executive produce the project via his The Con production banner along with Ben Silverman, H.T. Owens and Mark Koops of Reveille Entertainment ("The Restaurant"). Also as part of the pact, Spurlock will get a blind script commitment from FX for a potential scripted series. FX is believed to have been involved in a bidding war for the project with at least one other broadcast network.

Word Wars

Dang, i wish i had seen Word Wars at the Boston Film Festival. It opens at the Coolidge from June 11th to June 17th.
There is a dedicated community of people for whom SCRABBLE is more than a domestic nicety – it is an obsession. They devote years of their lives to mental and physical preparation and travel the country – some full-time – competing in cutthroat tournaments. The dictionary is studied with religious devotion, each obscure word another weapon for the ultimate battle. For some, the game keeps them teetering on the safe side of sanity. For others, it has pushed them just over. Some scrape by on the meager winnings alone.

*Sigh* where is my big stoner-dread-scrabble-geek? At the very least least i picked up some "Q" words without a "U" (QAT, QAID, QINTAR... ) Maybe that will help in one of the four games i am currently losing on-line.

Stalking Errol Morris

i managed to track down Errol Morris' house this weekend. Not that i would bug him, but i had heard that it was a very nice house. And it was! i don't know what i expected, an Interrotron up on blocks in the driveway?

A morsel of wisdom from the main page of his website:

Why It Makes Sense to Bite the Hand that feeds you

  1. Hand bound to betray you eventually. Preemptive strike. Get it before it gets you
  2. Alleviate protein deficiency
  3. Keep gums healthy
  4. Hand less likely poisoned than food
  5. Tastes good
  6. Why not... ?

God bless PBS

During this, the "Reagan memorial week", they are dedicating programming time to the history of the Carter administration and the Nobel Peace Prize. Even if it is 2 a.m., still, very nice.

Low-Carb Losing Steam

Demand May Not Be Keeping Up With Supply of Products

By Margaret Webb Pressler
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, May 18, 2004; Page E01
The nation's appetite for low-carbohydrate foods seems bottomless, judging by the many low-carb products showing up in supermarkets and the new menu items at restaurants and fast-food chains. And when Krispy Kreme Doughnuts Inc. recently announced slowing sales, it put part of the blame on low-carb diets.

Yet the mood at a recent Washington conference on the business was bleak. Sales of low-carb products have fallen sharply at independent and health food stores, and some longtime industry insiders say a shakeout has begun.

Two accused of phoning in plane bomb threat so one could retrieve passport

AP wire service June 5, 2004

PHILADELPHIA -- A bomb threat against two American Airlines flights was a hoax to allow a traveler time to retrieve her passport, the FBI said Friday. ADVERTISEMENT Hatice Ceylan, 18, and Ilyas Savas, 33, were charged in federal court with violations including conspiracy, said Jeffrey A. Lampinki, special agent in charge for the FBI's Philadelphia office.

The suspects had been scheduled to fly Wednesday from Philadelphia to Boston and then to London, but Ceylan forgot her passport, the FBI said.

Savas allegedly called in the bomb threat to a hotel Wednesday morning to give Ceylan time to get the document.

Fahrenheit 9/11 finds coalition of willing distributors

After being famously dropped by Disney, Michael Moore's award-winning documentary Fahrenheit 9/11 has finally secured US distribution and will hit American cinemas on June 25. [emphasis mine-SG]

The film is to be released by a partnership of Lions Gate Films, IFC Films and the Fellowship Adventure Group, which was formed by Miramax's Harvey and Bob Weinstein specifically to market Moore's film.

Just imagine the meetings that took place! It seems just like that scene in RKO 281 where all the studio heads are sitting around trying to figure out what dirt Hearst has on each of them. (Except that Liev Schrieber is ever-so-slightly hotter than Michael Moore. Sorry, Michael.)

EDIT 6/3: Now you can see the trailer.
