Don't forget the Perseids!

The ongoing Perseid Meteor Shower should be at its strongest tonight and tomorrow night. Although meteors should be visible all night long, the best time to watch will be between 2:00 AM and dawn each night. In dark, moonless, predawn skies you may see dozens of meteors per hour. Sky enthusiasts in Europe and Asia might see an unusual burst of meteors near 2100 hours UT. Grains of cosmic sand and gravel shed from Comet Swift-Tuttle will streak across the sky as they vaporize during entry into Earth's atmosphere. Tracing the meteor trails backwards, experienced skygazers will find they converge on the constellation Perseus, thus this annual meteor shower's name. Pictured above is a Perseid meteor from 2002 over a rock formation in the US Southwest desert. Shadowing and blurring are caused by the long 10-minute exposure. The brightest Perseids can be seen from anywhere on Earth by monitoring the continuously returning images from the Night Sky Live cameras.

So why does it look like a big X? A likely explanation is that the central star - actually a close pair of stars - is surrounded by a thick dust torus which pinches the otherwise spherical outflow into tip-touching cone shapes.
So like a big dz2 orbital then?

Methane discovery could signal life on Mars

Last Update: Monday, March 29, 2004. 9:19pm (AEST)

Scientists studying Mars say they have found evidence of methane in the atmosphere of the Red Planet, which they say could be a sign of present day life.

It was detected by telescopes on Earth and has recently been confirmed by instruments onboard the European Space Agency's orbiting Mars Express craft.

According to the scientists, methane does not last for long in the Martian atmosphere and is being constantly replenished.

It is possible that there are active volcanoes on the planet, but no evidence of activity has been found so far.

The other more controversial theory is that living bacteria, similar to that on Earth, are producing the methane.

MMMMMARS ROCKS!

OK, inside joke. As in rocks from Mars (Dick Zare) not the fact that Mars r0xx0rs, which is also true.

But how cool is water on Mars?

"Liquid water once flowed through these rocks. It changed their texture, and it changed their chemistry," said Dr. Steve Squyres of Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y., principal investigator for the science instruments on Opportunity and its twin, Spirit. "We've been able to read the tell-tale clues the water left behind, giving us confidence in that conclusion," he said.
